I wanted more.

This morning I listened to an old interview from the the world’s most feared negotiator, Jim Camp.

Can’t get enough of this guy.

Sadly, he passed away a couple years ago.

I have listened to this interview with him 5 or 6 times now, and will continue to do so.

Vision drive decision.

If you want to sell someone something (a product, service, idea, etc), you need to create a vision for them.

It’s about THEIR vision, not yours.

One example Camp gave in an interview was with seatbelts.

We all know that seatbelts save lives.

There are thousands of studies, stats & figures out there proving that.

Yet, thousands of people die every year because they didn’t wear a seatbelt.

Instead of sharing facts with these people, Jim suggests asking questions that create vision…

“When your car collides with another car at 60 MPH, where will your body end up?”

 

Now that creates a vision!

You think that would help people buckle up?

Most likely.

Camp used to sell water filters door-to-door.

He tried the sales pitch the company suggested, but failed miserably with it.

So, he started asking this question…

“Just tell me you don’t want softer hair and I’ll leave.”
He had the women saying: Come right in!

You must paint a picture of the OUTCOME your product or service provides.

Facts tell.

Stories sell.

Imagine writing (fun) little emails with tips & strategies to help your market.

Then selling them your product, or service, or consultation, or idea, etc.

Basically, what I am doing right now.

So I like sharing mistakes.

I feel you can learn from my mistakes.

It sure gives me a lot of content to talk about.

For my online scheduling calendar, I have always used TimeTrade.

Recently, I heard people talking about a couple others, and my TimeTrade expired.

So I ended up going with Calendly, as people seemed to like that one.

So I signed up for an account, and thought everything was good to go.

On Friday, I got an email notification for an appointment for today.

It seems this LinkedIn thing is starting to pay off.

At 8:00, I went to call the guy.

However, I could not find the guy’s phone number for the life of me.

I searched all over the place, and ended up emailing him.

He got back to me about an hour later, and he was booked up for the rest of the day.

I told him the story, and told him it was 100% my fault, as I was new to Calendly.

Years ago, I would have blamed the software for not adding the phone field by default.

In business, and in life, you MUST take 100% responsibility.

Personal responsibility is a HUGE problem in our society, as so many like to place blame, and I was like that for years.

It serves absolutely ZERO purpose for you, or the person (or thing) you’re blaming.

It’s on you.

Now if someone dies, that’s not your responsibility, I am not saying that.

However, you are responsible for how you react to it. How you deal with it.

That is 100% in your control.

Over the last 24 months or so, I have made this switch, and it’s a powerful one.

I recommend you take 100% ownership for everything going on in your life.

How to Boost Confidence, Productivity & So Much More

Last week I saw a fantastic quote in a Facebook group.

It was a quote from ol’ Albie Einstein.

“Compound interest is the eight wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it…he who doesn’t…pays it. Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.”
It’s the Slight Edge, the book I talk about all the damn time.

I was never a fan of the Seinfeld show.

Just didn’t see what all the excitement was about.

I was, however, a fan of how Jerry Seinfeld got started in comedy.

The story goes…

He credits his success to this dumb, yet wildly effective method. Every January, he would hang up a large calendar on his wall.

Every day that he wrote new material, he had the pleasure of drawing a big red “X” over that day.

Drawing the Xs was quite rewarding, so he continued doing it. Eventually, he created a chain of red Xs.

The idea was to never break the chain.

In fact, there is a website called, you guessed it…. http://dontbreakthechain.com/

I put my own twist on it, and took a page out of the Andy Frisella playbook, and am tracking my wins each day.

Here is my calendar hanging on my wall in my office with Ws….

W = Win the Day

I try and put daily deposits in four categories; mind, health, relationships & wealth.

Over the last eight days, I have been perfect.

Typically, I would get lazy around Thursdays/Fridays, and would slack off on the weekends.

Not no more.

Since tracking this, I have noticed…

  • A boost in confidence
  • A sense of accomplishment
  • Amanda & I getting along great
  • Much happier
  • An increase in mental clarity
  • More fulfillment
  • A drastic increase in productivity
  • More energy

A few of the many benefits and feelings I have experienced.This is such a stupid simple exercise, but it’s been so worth it.

Go out and buy a desk calendar.

Hang it on your wall.

Come up with 4 – 7 daily tasks that you want to complete each & everyday.

When you compete all the tasks put a X or a W on the day.

Do it again the next day, and the following day.

Do it for a week.

Report back to me.

You can do anything, once you stop trying to do everything.

A Fundamental Business Lesson from the New Orleans Saints

This player had ONE job…

This post was inspired by something Justin Brooke posted yesterday, and the New Orleans Saints.

If you saw the game yesterday, you saw an ending you might not ever see again.

All the Saints had to do was TACKLE the guy,.

There was no time on the clock, and the game would have been over, IF he tackled him.

That’s it.

Here is a shot of his attempted tackle…

The fundamentals of football are: blocking & tackling.

That is what is taught when you first get started in pee-wee football.

The New Orleans safety was going for a big hit, to be featured on ESPN highlights, a viral video, social media, etc.

Unfortunately, this is quite common nowadays with NFL players.

If this guy did what he was taught when he was 9-years old, the Saints would be playing for the Super Bowl this Sunday.

Marketing comes down to the fundamentals…

MARKET — Who is your ideal target market? Specificity wins here

MESSAGE — Once you know your market, you can now craft a compelling & meaningful message for them.

MEDIA — Where are you going to deliver your message?

Those are the “blocking & tackling” of effective and profitable marketing, online or offline.

Master those, and you’ll be ahead of 98.3% of your market, if not more.

What Eminem Can Teach You About Business

Did you know….

Eminem went to rehab in Brighton, Michigan.

A small town about 45 miles west of Detroit.

It’s where I spent the first 25 years of my life, before I traded the grey skies and snow in April for the bright lights of Sin City.

In fact, Annie, my younger sister, went to the same rehab, about 6 months after Eminem was there in 2008.

He put out a new album yesterday and for the last 12 – 15 years I’ve always been so excited for days like this.

Maybe it’s the old age, but I wasn’t too excited about it.

Truth be told, I didn’t even know about it till 9:02 pm on Thursday night when it was released (midnight east coast).

Anywho…

I was showing Amanda my favorite track on the album (arose), and she said to me…

“Turn it off, I can’t listen to it anymore

I was like huh?

And she said, “I can relate too much and it makes me sad

Not going to get into the details about that, but understood what she was saying, and it got me thinking….

Eminem is known to rap about his life, his struggles with his Mom, drugs, ex-wife, Dad to name a few.

He’s extremely vulnerable.

He’s arguably the best rapper of all-time, although I am a bit biased. He’s in the top 3/5 though.

Most rappers talk about the high life they live — cars, mon-ey, women, etc.

Very rarely does he rap/brag about that stuff.

Vulnerability = power.

It’s not easy, and one of my favorite books on the topic is Daring Greatly (purchase that book here) from Brene Brown.

People are CRAVING THE TRUTH.

You want to attract your perfect people into your tribe?

Share the real and the raw.

There is far too much bullshit online in the entrepreneurial space, and non-entrepreneurial space.

People constantly sharing their highlight reels.

People see through it.

Or most people do.

Time and time again, the more vulnerable I am when sending an email, publishing a Facebook post, putting out a YouTube video.

The bigger reaction I get.

Now, it does take me a lot longer to hit ‘publish’ on those posts, as it’s scary, but every damn time it’s worth it. I promise you that.

Here is an email I got from a lady a couple months back…

She’s commented on a few of my emails this year, and it ALWAYS makes me smile.

So this weekend, I want you to share a vulnerability with your tribe.

Send an email, post in your FB group, shoot a YouTube video, Instagram, wherever. Pick up the phone and call a family member or friend and share something.

I don’t care where at, just share something real & raw with your tribe.

I want you to pull an Eminem 🙂

Success Comes Down to ONE Word

Or what I say far too often — Do as I say, not as I do. 

I didn’t publish a bog post yesterday, and I am trying to be consistent with daily hilariousness on this blog.

I imagine you look like this while reading these blog posts…

Right?

Well…

Minus the face tattoo.

Unless, you’re into that sort of thing.

And who am I to judge?

Anywho…

This is what it takes.

I have told you about my love for the book The Slight Edge, and how it is my absolute favorite book.

Turning simple disciplines into massive success.

And I think you can summarize that down to ONE single word.

CONSISTENCY

That is what it takes.

The successful people are not cut from a different cloth from you & I.

Most do not have advantages over any of us.

They have 24 hours, just like you & I do.

The one thing they have done, is they have mastered consistency.

We are weeks away from 2018, but you can get started today.

Write out a 90 day plan.

Write out what you want to accomplish in the 4 areas of your life; mind, health, relationships & wealth.

And then reverse engineer each of them

  1. What do you need to do daily to master your mind?
  2. What do you need to do daily to take control of your health?
  3. What do you need to do daily to have a thriving relationship with your wife/partner & kids?
  4. What do you need to do daily for your busienss to propel your busienss forward?

I print out a weekly action plan every week, and score myself. This has helped me tremendously.

You cannot improve what you do not measure. 

Focus on winning the day.

Don’t worry much about next week or next month.

Just like eating an elephant — one bite at a time.

I love that phrase, but who the Hell eats an elephant? Is that a delicacy somewhere? Do you put ketchup on it? You put it on a bun? Does it go well with wine?

There are things I need to know!

Just a fair warning….

Just what you wanted to read about right?

As if all the experts in your newsfeed wasn’t enough.

No, I am not going to tell you to mortgage your home to invest today. I actually saw an article today of people doing this.

And no, I am not some Bit Coin expert who started trading last Thursday and have a course to sell.

None of that here.

I just want to share my opinion of the 93.8% of Bit Coin experts who suddenly popped up in the last 60 days.

Let me start with a little back story…

I got started in online marketing in 2010. It feels like a lifetime ago.

I started selling digital marketing services, all of them.

To any business owner who’d listen to me.

I didn’t know what a target market was. Back then, “small business owners” was my target market.

Makes me laugh now. And shake my head.

And it all makes sense why it was such a struggle.

After about 18 months, I niched down and started offering mobile websites to attorneys.

One service, one niche.

Success followed.

18 months or so later, I changed paths as I was sick of working with attorneys.

I then started offering Facebook ad management to real estate agents.

One service, one niche.

Success followed.

After about 16 months, I was sick of client work and started dabbling in Amazon, as that was the hot thing on the market.

About 4-5 months later, I was not having the instant success the courses I bought promised me.

I then tried my hand at Shopify, and did quite well.

Did that for 14 months.

Launched 4 stores, and 3 of them bombed. The jewelry store, which was successful, generated just over $270k in about a year.

I was “successful”.

However, I was not too happy. It wasn’t what the big Man upstairs put me on the Earth to do.

I ended up closing the store, and changing direction once again.

Do you see the pattern?

Maybe you can relate to it?

This sums up a far majority of the online marketer’s journeys.

Over the years, I never considered myself an entrepreneur. Just a little over a year ago, another marketer brought up the idea of opportunity seeker vs. entrepreneur.

That’s it!

All those years, I wasn’t an entreprenuer, I was an opportunity seeker. I chased the bright shiny object jumping from one biz idea to another.

And every time you jump from one opportunity to the next, you’re basically shooting yourself in the foot, as you’re constantly starting over. Ruining just about any momentum you’ve created.

Most of these people are not fulfilled, so they jump from idea to idea seeking more/easy mon-ey, as they think that is what they are after.

I get it, because that was me for YEARS.

That’s what I am seeing with all these Bit Coin experts lately. There are some guys I follow who are getting into Bit Coin, but they are doing it for investment purposes, not a business opportunity.

There will be something else in 6-8 months and the masses will chase that hot trend like a little kid running after the ice cream man with a wadded up dollar in his hand screaming, Wait for me!!

An entrepreneur, in my opinion, is set out to solve a problem in the world.

They are ruthlessly committed to their mission.

They are focused on serving their community as best they can.

They understand things do not go as planned, and will not jump ship, at the first sign of struggle.

They are committed to playing the long game.

They are not in it for the money, but it to transform lives.

They are in to to make a dent in the universe, as Steve Jobs would say.

I am reminded by one of my all-time favorite Gary V quotes in this…

That is what the Dadpreneur Freedom project is all about.

It’s about helping Dadprenuers build a busienss they can be proud of, work with kick-ass people, and leave a lasting legacy behind doing what they love.

It’s about helping Dadprenuers avoid the mountain of mistakes I’ve made in the last 7 years.

This is work I am truly proud of.

A Common Trait Found Among Winners

Have you ever tried to take a family picture with a 2 & 4 year old?

It’s like herding cats.

Yesterday, we all got dressed up and planned to go see Santa, but the kids were a bit tired.

Seeing Santa is no easy task, and when you add tired to the mix…

Well, lets just say I’d rather dig my eyeballs out with spoons.

So instead of doing nothing, Amanda wanted to get some pics by our Christmas tree.

I thought…

Who’s going to take the picture?

Amanda said, “grab the ladder”

I set the ladder up, moved the couch and we grabbed Amanda’s camera.

The one I got her for Christmas 2 years ago, and she has used like 3 times.

Not bitter.

Not at all.

Anywho….

Here was the best shot, out of about 17 takes….

We did the best with what we had.

And that is a damn important lesson in the world of entrepreneurship.

I thanked Amanda and told her what an awesome idea that was.

She replied with, “I’m resourceful”

And that is what is takes to win an an entrepreneur.

Here is the definition of resourceful:

Having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.

“I don’t have money”

This is probably the most common myth bullshit lie people tell themselves for not being successful.

We live in such exciting times, that you do not need money to start most online businesses.

We should all be extremely grateful for the opportunity that is in front of all of us.

Does money help?

Of course!

Iit can certainly speed up the process, but it’s not a requirement.

If you’re bootstrapping it, it’s going to take you putting in the work day in and day out.

You must be 100% focused.

You must be ruthlessly committed to it.

You must be consistent.

And honestly, those 3 things, you need those whether you have money in the bank or you’re flat broke.

In October of 2010, I got started with less than $50. I bought a domain, and $30 in upsells (that I never used) from Go Daddy for a domain name.

I self taught myself web design by watching hundreds of YouTube videos.

I then cold called 5,000 Las Vegas businesses selling websites.

After 6 weeks, I made 2 sales.

$300 each.

It absolutely SUCKED!

But…

Taught me so much about myself and busienss.

When I launched my Shopify store in June of 2015, I started with $5 per day with Facebook advertising.

$5/day, then $7, then $9, then $13, then $18, then $20, then $27 and on and on and on….

In 6 months time, I was spending $1,000 per DAY on Facebook — absolutely mind-blowing to me.

“I don’t have time”

Another common bullshit excuse people tell themselves.

I got started when I was single, with no job, so I used that to my advantage. People with kids have much less spare time, I understand that now.

You find the time, and put that time into your business.

You wake up 30 minutes earlier and work on your busienss.

You stay up an 15 minutes later and work on your business.

You quit watching TV, and put that time into your business.

You quit surfing the web, and put the time into your business.

You set your phone down, and put that time into your business.

Just about anyone can find 60 minutes in their day.

You need to be very efficient, but it’s absolutely possible.

You have to be resourceful.

You have to find a way.

Whatever it takes, until it takes.

Admittedly, I have made excuses over the years. I ain’t perfect, and still make them. I’ve got a lot better, but still lie to myself.

Understand it’s not going to happen overnight.

You must…TRUST THE PROCESS.

Over the last 7+ years, I have learned quite a bit.

And I tried my absolute best to jam pack all the wisdom learned into a course, which I call Dadprenuer Freedom.

Don’t get me wrong, this does involve work.

There will be days where you want to burn it all to the ground.

And you have to push though those days.

$100 for a Book? Money Well Spent

I have another confession…

Shocking, I know…

No, it’s not about the time my girlfriend dumped me in 6th grade by sliding a note in my locker and I sobbed uncontrollably like a baby…for days weeks.

Not bitter at all, I am over it.

*wipes away tears*

Enough about my time at Maltby Middle School in 1993.

I am absolutely obsessed with personal development. The constant improvement of myself.

It started when I read The Miracle Morning, 3 years ago this month.

That booked changed my life. It opened up my eyes (and brain) to the importance of working on one’s self — every. damn. day.

If you have not read it, I highly recommend it.

So last week, I told Amanda I bought a new book. Nothing new, as I try to read 2 books per month.

It was the fact that I told her it cost $100, that got her attention.

She looked at me as if I has a third eye, and tentacles sticking out of my head.

As if I was from another planet.

At times, I am just flat out weird (I see you nodding your head 😆), and I do get the look often.

Finally, after 36 years, I am learning to embrace the weirdness.

Anywho…

This morning in the gym, I was listening to the audio version of the book.

And the author shared one idea, that instantly made the book worth it — 10x over.

All it takes is one gold nugget from a book, a video, an email, a FB post, a conversation, really anything, can drastically change your life.

Of course, if you implement it.

And the idea is “brain dead” simple, and I’ve heard it before.

However, this time it was different.

Why?

I paid for it.

I made the investment.

Most do not value fre-e.

Myself included.

I will most likely listen to the book multiple times, and will read it with a highlighter in hand, once it arrives at Chateau de Dukes.

Plan one family outing each & every week.

That’s it.

Nothing earth shattering, but something I WILL be implementing immediately.

It’s quite common for men to put all (or a far majority) of their focus on their business.

In Dadprener Freedom, it’s all about designing a business around your life — not the other way around.

It’s not about hustling & grinding your face off while your family wonders why you’re never around or constantly stressed out.
